sir,
It transpired in the course of the
quiry into the salaries of subordinate officers, that in the
Treasury Department there is no check on the Stamping of Deeds,
the machine used being in the hands of two Portuguese clerks.
Without wishing to make the slightest insinuation against th$51-
Clerks, about whose honesty no question has been raised,we beg
to protest most strongly against the continuance of the pres-
ent practice, and to suggest that the Government obtain without
delay a more modern machine which will register the amount of
stamping that is done, and also that, until the machine can be
obtained, some proper supervisionshould be exercised.
