It transpired in the course of the

quiry into the salaries of subordinate officers, that in the

Treasury Department there is no check on the Stamping of Deeds,

the machine used being in the hands of two Portuguese clerks.

Without wishing to make the slightest insinuation against th$51-

Clerks, about whose honesty no question has been raised,we beg

to protest most strongly against the continuance of the pres-

ent practice, and to suggest that the Government obtain without

delay a more modern machine which will register the amount of

stamping that is done, and also that, until the machine can be

obtained, some proper supervisionshould be exercised.
